Two openings in two weeks means the man is at his absolute prime.
There's something A. List about explorers unabashedly staking claim to new frontiers. When Neil Armstrong tapped Old Glory into the moon, you can be darn sure he was thinking “this is pretty awesome” and not “I wonder if somebody else lives here.” So too the welcome expansion of Jean-Georges Vongerichten's restaurant empire with ABC Kitchen, now open inside the ABC Carpet & Home Store off Union Square. His second project in as many weeks (the Mark opened last week), ABC has the appeal of a modern, well-groomed farmhouse: whitewashed floor, old wooden beams, white-painted brick, and the whimsical chandelier and glass flourishes you'd expect from a partnership with the eponymous store. The farm-to-table menu matches, with greenmarket ingredients in dishes like Peekytoe Crab Toast, Shaved Fluke with Blood Oranges, Roasted Pork T-Bone with Apple Meyer Lemon Puree, and Chocolate Layer Cake with Toasted Marshmallow Icing – changing often and with the season.
