Solberg takes Mexico opener!!!
2003 world champion Petter Solberg holds a 0.2 second lead after the opening stage of the Mexico Rally!!!
The 36-year-old Norwegian finished Guanajuato’s tricky 1.05km street stage in 53.2 seconds, despite appearing to nudge a wall in the tunnel section.
“It was crazy in there with so many people,” said Solberg, after finishing narrowly ahead of seven-times world champion Sebastien Loeb. “We had a moment in the tunnel but we’re okay.”
Loeb’s French compatriot Sebastien Ogier finished third, a further 0.3 seconds back, and is looking forward to stage two getting underway on Friday.
“It’s not rally but it’s okay with a rally car running inside an amazing city,” he said.
“We just drove in the middle of the road absolutely no risk. The real rally starts in the morning.”
